Glick Schiller and Fouron write jointly about Haitians whose lives run across the border between Haiti and the United States, using Fouron's own migration from Aux Cayes as one thread and 109 interviews conducted in Haiti, most with people of very little money, as another. Their name for the attachment they describe is long-distance nationalism, a claim to belong to a political community reaching past a homeland's territorial edges, strong enough to move people to send money, build houses, lobby or return to fight. The book presses against the view that globalisation has emptied states of importance. Remittances sustain the Haitian economy, immigrants organise as political constituencies, and Haitian governments claim emigrants as citizens abroad, so nation-states stay central even as capital, labour and media cross borders freely. Two centuries of American involvement in Haiti frame the argument throughout.
