Finding a Time and Place for the Haitian Revolution

Johnson · 2019 · The History Teacher 52(2), 319-331

Where does the Haitian Revolution belong in a world history survey? Johnson answers by reviewing fifteen world history textbooks published between 2011 and 2016. Only one leaves the revolution out entirely and several now give it four pages or more, an improvement on earlier counts, yet the coverage keeps the event tethered to France and the Atlantic. The African political and military traditions that enslaved people carried with them rarely appear, and Toussaint Louverture is the one figure every book names, usually without noting that he had been free for years and had held slaves himself. Johnson also catalogues errors: Boukman Dutty called a poet, gens de couleur flattened into mulattoes, the enslaved population of Saint-Domingue doubled. She ties these gaps to who writes textbooks, largely senior specialists in Asian history at elite universities, and asks that the revolution be taught as a world historical event.
