Bulfinch Lambe, a Royal African Company employee held captive first in Allada and then in Dahomey, turned up in London in 1731 carrying what he said was a letter from King Agaja to George I. The Commissioners for Trade called it a forgery and historians have largely ignored it since. Law locates the full text quoted in the Commons proceedings of 1789, where an opponent of Wilberforce cited its passages on human sacrifice to argue that buying captives saved their lives, and traces the original to the papers of the first Duke of Chandos, then governor of the Company. Reproducing it with annotation, Law argues that the document undercuts the case made by Atkins and later by Akinjogbin that Agaja wanted to end the slave trade. The letter offers George I forty slaves and forty times forty more, promises no shortage, and asks for an English factory with Lambe as its governor.
