Compiling roughly 180 revolts and conspiracies between 1776 and 1848, Geggus asks what that wave of rebellion owed to the white Atlantic's age of revolution. The tally is deliberately rough, and he explains why: the record reflects newspaper density as much as slave behaviour, and the boundary between a slave revolt and a multi-class or maroon uprising has to be drawn by hand. Caribbean societies dominate in both frequency and scale. Population growth and mass African arrivals correlate with rebellion in Bahia, Cuba and Louisiana, but not in the British colonies, where the late risings on Barbados, Demerara and Jamaica were mounted by creoles. Geggus finds Genovese's claim of a new ideological type of revolt poorly supported by examples, and gives more weight to abolitionism, which reached enslaved people more directly than libertarian rhetoric did. Only in Martinique and St Croix in 1848 did rebellion clearly determine when emancipation arrived.
