Toussaint Louverture: The Story of the Only Successful Slave Revolt in History. A Play in Three Acts

James · 2013

C. L. R. James wrote this three-act drama on the Haitian Revolution in 1934, four years before The Black Jacobins, and it was staged in London in 1936 with Paul Robeson as Toussaint. The original script was thought lost until Christian Hogsbjerg found it in a British Trotskyist's papers at the University of Hull. The volume prints that script alongside the revised 1936 scene, the programme, press notices and reviews, and a group of James's journalism from the 1930s. Hogsbjerg's introduction places the play beside the history as a companion work, one that gave James room to dramatise Toussaint's tragedy and to give weight to the political ideas insurgents carried from Africa, a theme the history treats more thinly. The two 1936 performances also matter as theatre history, marking the first appearance of black professional actors in a play by a black writer on the British stage.
