Guarionex was the principal cacique of the Magua region. Initially diplomatic, he attempted to appease the Spanish by offering agricultural produce in place of gold. But the insatiable demands of the colonizers led to tensions. Eventually, Guarionex took part in resistance efforts. His story reflects the failed attempts at peaceful accommodation with an empire built on extraction.
