Enriquillo, born of noble Taíno lineage and raised in a Christian monastery, later led a twelve-year rebellion in the Bahoruco mountains against the Spanish. A convert to Catholicism, he used legal petitions and then armed resistance to demand justice for his people. His uprising stands as one of the most sustained and successful indigenous revolts in colonial history.
