Appointed as Alcalde Mayor, Roldán led a rebellion against the Columbus administration, exploiting both settler dissatisfaction and indigenous unrest. He effectively split the colony, setting up a rival government. Though eventually reconciled with the crown, his uprising exposed the fragility of Spanish control.
