Sister of Bohéchio and a respected leader in her own right, Anacaona welcomed the Spanish into Xaragua. After her brother’s death, she governed the region and maintained a fragile peace. In 1503, under Governor Ovando, she and many of her nobles were massacred during a deceptive feast. She was hanged, becoming a symbol of betrayal and martyrdom.
