Human cannibalism. The word is derived from Greek anthropos, “man” and phagein, “to eat.” A word too clinical for its meaning, too Greek for what it really describes—one human consuming another. Cannibalism, yes, but more than that. An act that, depending on who tells the story, is either savagery or necessity, ritual or survival, horror or resistance. The conquistadors said the Caribes ate flesh, used it to justify their wars. But hunger, real hunger, does not ask for permission.
