A young witness to the horrors of Ovando’s rule, Las Casas later became a Dominican friar and one of the first advocates for indigenous rights. His writings, including A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies, exposed the cruelty of Spanish colonialism and laid the foundation for future humanitarian critiques.
