The Gede: Vignettes of Life, Death, the Dead and Rebirth

Bellegarde-Smith · 2004 · Journal of Haitian Studies 10(2), 162-167

Offered as notes rather than a finished argument, these pages ask why the Gede, the spirits who preside over death and sexuality, occupy so large a place in the Vodou ritual year. Bellegarde-Smith writes from years of attending their annual services near Miami and outside Montreal, ceremonies that pull worshippers in from across North America and Haiti. His starting point is that Vodou theology is built around human beings rather than around God, so body, mind and soul carry equal weight and death becomes a transfer of energy. Legba opens existence with chance and free will; the Gede supply the one certainty and then reopen the cycle through reincarnation. Powdered white faces, black or purple clothing and sunglasses missing a lens mark beings who see into two worlds at once. Their obscenity, he argues, licenses joy in lives that hold little of it, and their mockery is aimed squarely at structures of domination.
