Edouard Glissant

Dash

Dash follows Glissant from the early poetry through the novels to the theoretical essays, treating them as one continuous project. Glissant emerges as a writer who declines two temptations at once: the bleak verdict that Caribbean communities are cultural wrecks, and the search for untouched origins that would fix identity in a pure past.

The refusal shapes even the biography. Dash notes how little Glissant discloses about his beginnings in the hill commune of Sainte-Marie, and reads his suspicion of founding fathers — Schoelcher, the maroon progenitor, Columbus, Césaire himself — as part of a diagnosis of dependency in the French departments. What autobiography there is has been dispersed into characters such as Mathieu and Mycéa.

Chapters on the early collections and Les Indes, then on La Lézarde and Le quatrième siècle, show landscape used not as a settled belonging but as movement: mountain against sea, the river descending to the plain.
