Diaspora, community and communication: Internet use in transnational Haiti

Parham · 2004 · Global Networks 4(2), 199-217

Public sphere theory, rarely brought to bear on studies of migrants online, drives this account of a Haitian discussion site. Parham followed the Haiti Global Village forums and the short-lived Coalition of Haitians for the Advancement of Haiti, a group conceived in an online exchange between two men and launched at a church meeting in Tampa. As a space for expression the forum worked well, being unmoderated and civil, with participants setting their own agenda and reflecting on what it means to be Haitian abroad. As a basis for organizing it failed within a year, because the founders sketched the group online before drawing in people on the ground, leaving no local relationships to hold it together. Longer-lived Haitian lists succeeded where members already knew each other through chapters and advocacy work. She also notes that the dominance of English quietly excluded some Kreyòl and French speakers.
