Ethics, in the older sense of a disposition that guides action, organises this study of contemporary Haitian fiction. Jean-Charles reads novels by Yanick Lahens, Kettly Mars and Évelyne Trouillot as the work of writers whose imaginative choices are shaped by Black feminist principles, and places them in a line running back to Paulette Poujol Oriol, novelist, theatre director and member of Haiti's first women's organisation. Chapters take up aging and intersectionality, sex and intimacy, class and geography, and an environmental ethic of land and sea, each built from close reading of selected novels. She chooses the term Black feminism over Haitian feminism deliberately, to situate Haitian women's writing inside a transnational project from which Caribbean thinkers have often been quietly excluded even as figures such as Lorde and Jordan were absorbed into it. Borrowing Gina Athena Ulysse's rasanblaj, she describes the book itself as a gathering of traditions.
