Fourteen tales collected around Plaisance and Cap Haitien in 1937, with the help of the writer J. B. Cineas and attributed to three named tellers, a farmer, a labourer and a cook. Simpson prefaces them with observations about what the stories do in village life. Accusations of being a loup garou, never made openly, tend to fall on the most prosperous people in a district, and the tales, by dramatising grievances against neighbours, bind the extended family together. The stories turn on a wife whose shed skin is salted and peppered so she cannot climb back into it, a sorcerer who must deliver one victim a year to keep her powers, a beggar who is the chief of the loups garous, and an underwater court that jails a spirit for frightening a farmer. Simpson doubts reports that the vodun cult is dying out, since its beliefs steady people whom schooling and medicine do not reach.
