Manifestos

Glissant · 2021

The manifestos Édouard Glissant and Patrick Chamoiseau wrote between 2000 and 2009, collected in English for the first time, together with two op-eds they signed jointly.

Some were composed in the aftermath of Barack Obama's election in 2008, and they land now in the middle of arguments about divided identity and the case against multiculturalism. Each piece answers to a particular political moment in France, the Caribbean or North America rather than to a general condition.

Across the collection the two writers take up the climate catastrophe, extractive industry, toxicity and the survival of colonial power, working through the poetic vocabulary they had developed elsewhere: Relation, globalization, globality or mondialité.
