Rethinking the Haitian Revolution: Slavery, Independence, and the Struggle for Recognition

Dupuy · 2019

Four linked essays reconsider what the Saint-Domingue revolution was and what came after it. Dupuy revises his own earlier position on capitalism and slavery, holding that Caribbean slave economies were capitalist because they existed to make commodities for sale at a profit in a world market, even though slavery blocked mechanisation and left them undeveloped. He then rejects the argument of Nick Nesbitt, Susan Buck-Morss and Pierre-Franklin Tavares that Hegel drew his master and slave dialectic from the colony, citing Hegel's own account of Africans and the mismatch between a struggle for mutual recognition and one the enslaved settled by removing the master. A third essay traces how Louverture's government seized planter estates and passed them to officers and officials, creating a new bourgeoisie split by colour. The last reads the 1825 indemnity as a bargain Petion and Boyer wanted, since French recognition would secure that class its property titles.
