Fatton's earlier book, Haiti's Predatory Republic, traced the brief ascendancy and subsequent crisis of Jean-Bertrand Aristide's Lavalas movement after the Duvalier dictatorship fell in 1986. Here he digs further down, into the social origins of Haitian despotism.
The question is why the country has been ruled, almost from its inception, by a succession of dictatorial regimes lording over an exploited majority. Fatton's answer turns on habitus: an intricate repertoire of practices, attitudes, and behavior grounded in the material foundation of the society that produces it.
