Seeds of Fiction: Graham Greene's Adventures in Haiti and Central America 1954-1983

Diederich · 2012

Diederich ran the Haiti Sun from Port-au-Prince, was jailed and expelled by Francois Duvalier in 1963, and went on reporting on the regime from exile in the Dominican Republic. His memoir reconstructs a thirty-year friendship with Graham Greene, beginning with the novelist's visits in the 1950s and turning on the 1965 journey the two made along the Dominican-Haitian frontier with the exiled priest Jean-Claude Bajeux. Working from his own notebooks and from correspondence released by the Greene estate, Diederich shows how the rebels, hotel keepers and informers they met became raw material for The Comedians, and how Greene's decision to write that novel was itself an act of political exposure. A second part follows the pair to Panama and Nicaragua and Greene's involvement with Omar Torrijos. The book is a working reporter's account of how journalism turns into fiction, and of what publication cost people in Haiti.
