When the Hands Are Many: Community Organization and Social Change in Rural Haiti

Smith · 2001

Rural Haitians organise themselves constantly, in labour exchange parties, mutual aid societies and peasant assemblies, and Smith argues that outsiders misread these groups by measuring them against imported yardsticks of progress. Drawing on years of fieldwork in the Grand'Anse and other regions, she builds her account from what members say and sing: work party songs, chante pwen that deliver criticism through indirection, Mardi Gras and rara performances, meeting talk. Three forms receive close description, the atribisyon with its shared labour and feasting, the sosyete with its offices and titles, and the gwoupman peyizan tied to the wider peasant movement. From these she draws a coherent vision of a good society, one that ties dignity to food, schooling, clean water and the right to speak without being beaten. That vision doubles as a critique of donor language about democracy and civil society, and as a request that foreigners undo some of their own assumptions.
