Ovando succeeded Bobadilla and was tasked with restoring order. Although he appeared pious and competent, his administration is remembered for its extreme brutality, particularly the massacre of Anacaona and her people. He systematized indigenous labor under the encomienda, accelerating the demographic collapse.
