Wheat reaches the Ethiopian highlands overland from Egypt

Word histories rule out the short crossing of the Red Sea and point up the Red Sea Hills instead.

Wheat, barley and chickpeas came to the Horn of Africa from the Levant, and the obvious route looks like the short crossing of the Red Sea from Arabia. The lexical evidence points elsewhere. These crops travelled from Egypt, south along the Red Sea Hills, which stayed marginally farmable in places until around 3300 BCE and closed afterwards. The people who received them were Cushitic speakers in the Ethiopian highlands who had been farming for a long time already, on two indigenous grains of their own, finger millet and teff. They added the newcomers to a system that worked. The plough arrived with the same package and became the main implement across the northern and central highlands. Further south and west, in the Sudan belt and East Africa, warm-season rainfall and different soils stopped the spread. Ecology drew that boundary. Accounts that read the limit as a failure of African farmers have the mechanism backwards.

Vignier III sits in Haiti and it carries a radiocarbon date around 3630 BCE. That is the earliest firmly dated human habitation we have on the island. I want to sit with the number for a second, because the arithmetic does something to you. From Vignier III to 1804 is about fifty four centuries. From 1804 to today is a little over two. So more than ninety six percent of the human story on this island happened before the country existed, and almost all of that ninety six percent gets compressed into a single sentence about Taínos in most school curricula. That compression is not an accident of space. It is the shape colonial history gives to a place, where the clock only starts when Europeans arrive to look at it. Around the thirty-fourth century BCE the climate of the eastern Sahara turned sharply drier and stayed that way. Steppe and semidesert grassland that had carried herds for millennia became the desert it is now, though patches held on well enough to support marginal livestock raising as late as about 2000 BCE. The pastoralists living out there had to go somewhere. They moved out of the emerging desert and settled among the communities already living along the Nile. That is the event that produced the Egypt of the textbooks, the thin green ribbon dependent on an annual flood. Before it, this was open country with mobile herders and a river running through it. After it, thousands of people and their cattle were compressed onto a floodplain a few kilometres wide. The competition for land and the density of population that followed drove polities to grow and swallow one another until the whole valley was unified around 3100 BCE.

Without the kiln there is no smelter

Metallurgy had to wait for potters, and Africa's potters were among the first in the world.

Copper was in use before anyone learned to smelt it. It occurs here and there as native copper, relatively pure pieces sitting inside the ore, and those can be hammered cold into shape. People did this in several parts of Africa and Eurasia, and the makers of the Old Copper Complex around the North American Great Lakes were doing it six thousand years ago. Getting metal out of ore is a different problem. It needs sustained high temperature under control, and in every region where it happened, smelting arrived only after ceramic technology was already known there. The kiln comes first and the furnace follows. That dependency has a consequence worth stating plainly. Ceramics were invented independently in Africa, among the oldest anywhere, by communities in the Sahara. The technology that made a fired pot possible is the technology that eventually made a smelter possible. Bronze and iron both rest on a foundation laid by potters.
