Languages record their debts. When early Egyptian took words for important cultural items from Nilo-Saharan languages, it took them from the communities upriver, and each borrowing marks a transaction. A people does not usually borrow a word without borrowing the thing, the practice or the technique it names. So the vocabulary works as a register of what moved and which way it went. The archaeology of the Nile valley had already shown the flow: pottery styles, maceheads and burial customs appearing in Sudan first and turning up in Egypt afterwards. The linguistic evidence is independent of the archaeology and it agrees with it. Both say that the cultural foundations of ancient Egypt were assembled in large part out of material that came from the Nilo-Saharan-speaking south. The relationship usually described as Egypt civilising Nubia runs the other way through most of the period in which those foundations were laid.

Vignier III sits in Haiti and it carries a radiocarbon date around 3630 BCE. That is the earliest firmly dated human habitation we have on the island. I want to sit with the number for a second, because the arithmetic does something to you. From Vignier III to 1804 is about fifty four centuries. From 1804 to today is a little over two. So more than ninety six percent of the human story on this island happened before the country existed, and almost all of that ninety six percent gets compressed into a single sentence about Taínos in most school curricula. That compression is not an accident of space. It is the shape colonial history gives to a place, where the clock only starts when Europeans arrive to look at it. This entry exists to start the clock earlier.

Copper was in use before anyone learned to smelt it. It occurs here and there as native copper, relatively pure pieces sitting inside the ore, and those can be hammered cold into shape. People did this in several parts of Africa and Eurasia, and the makers of the Old Copper Complex around the North American Great Lakes were doing it six thousand years ago. Getting metal out of ore is a different problem. It needs sustained high temperature under control, and in every region where it happened, smelting arrived only after ceramic technology was already known there. The kiln comes first and the furnace follows. That dependency has a consequence worth stating plainly. Ceramics were invented independently in Africa, among the oldest anywhere, by communities in the Sahara. The technology that made a fired pot possible is the technology that eventually made a smelter possible. Bronze and iron both rest on a foundation laid by potters.

Cotton weaving was invented at least three times with three different plants
Peru, Mesoamerica, India and Africa each domesticated a cotton species growing on their own ground.

Loom weaving is the mechanical line of technological descent, and cotton is where it shows most clearly at a global scale. The machine looms of modern industry evolved from methods that begin in the middle of the Holocene. People invented cotton weaving independently in at least three parts of the world and possibly four. The proof lies in the plants. Each set of inventors domesticated a cotton species native to their own region: Gossypium barbadense in Peru, Gossypium hirsutum in Central America and Mexico, and across India and Africa the two species Gossypium herbaceum and Gossypium arboreum. Nobody was carrying seed between these regions. The pattern is the one that already holds for ceramics and for metallurgy. Communities far apart, with no contact, set out on the same trajectory of invention thousands of years ago and arrived at the same transformative technology by their own routes, working with whatever grew where they lived.
