By the later fourth millennium BCE dense populations had formed in a handful of places: the Nile valley through Egypt, Nubia and northern Sudan, then Mesopotamia, the Indus valley, the two great river valleys of China, and the coast of Peru. In each of them access to resources and to power grew steadily more unequal. Social classes formed, then chiefly authority, then kings and the full apparatus of stratification, with religious authority consolidated into formal priesthoods alongside. None of that started from zero. The societies of the previous three thousand years were smaller and less intensely ranked, and they already had inherited offices, ritual specialists and differences of status. The large states took those materials and hardened them, formalised them and put them in stone. Africa is where the process can be watched most closely, because reconstructed vocabulary and comparative ethnography reach into periods that left no writing, while the records of the literate civilisations begin only after the outcome was settled.

Vignier III sits in Haiti and it carries a radiocarbon date around 3630 BCE. That is the earliest firmly dated human habitation we have on the island. I want to sit with the number for a second, because the arithmetic does something to you. From Vignier III to 1804 is about fifty four centuries. From 1804 to today is a little over two. So more than ninety six percent of the human story on this island happened before the country existed, and almost all of that ninety six percent gets compressed into a single sentence about Taínos in most school curricula. That compression is not an accident of space. It is the shape colonial history gives to a place, where the clock only starts when Europeans arrive to look at it. This entry exists to start the clock earlier.

The donkey was the first multipurpose beast of burden in the world
Africa domesticated the animal that made long distance trade and wheeled transport possible.

One animal went out from Africa to the rest of the world and changed how goods move. Modern contempt for the donkey obscures the scale of that. Centuries of Western usage have turned the animal's name into a term of abuse for stupidity, and the abuse has done real damage to the record. The donkey was the first multipurpose beast of burden in history. It carried loads and it carried riders. In the Middle East people harnessed it early to wheeled vehicles. Long distance trade in goods depended on owning donkeys, and so did the first wheeled transport anywhere. The uses people found for it very likely supplied the model for domesticating and working horses and camels later on. Every chariot in Egypt, every camel caravan crossing Arabia, every cavalry charge in the ancient world descends conceptually from an animal that Africans brought under care thousands of years before a horse carried anyone.

Copper was in use before anyone learned to smelt it. It occurs here and there as native copper, relatively pure pieces sitting inside the ore, and those can be hammered cold into shape. People did this in several parts of Africa and Eurasia, and the makers of the Old Copper Complex around the North American Great Lakes were doing it six thousand years ago. Getting metal out of ore is a different problem. It needs sustained high temperature under control, and in every region where it happened, smelting arrived only after ceramic technology was already known there. The kiln comes first and the furnace follows. That dependency has a consequence worth stating plainly. Ceramics were invented independently in Africa, among the oldest anywhere, by communities in the Sahara. The technology that made a fired pot possible is the technology that eventually made a smelter possible. Bronze and iron both rest on a foundation laid by potters.
